Hello fellow readers, how are you doing today? :)
As you may or may not know I've been reading a lot lately; and I thought I'd share with you some of my favorite books of those I read the past 3 months. If you have any recommendations for me, please leave me a comment! ♥
The Fault In Our Stars - John Green
I suppose you've heard about this book (if you haven't, no wait, that's not even possible since you obviously have access to the internet). I read this book in one day without a pause, not even eating or drinking! The novel is quite engrossing and I love John's humor. It is somber as well but didn't leave me crying like other books did (If you've read this book: NO I'M NOT A HORRIBLE PERSON I JUST-- IDK).
[Me rambling:] What I like most about this book are the theories about life and death, the universe, as I've had a lot of those tumbling around in my head as well - and it was awesome to see I'm clearly not the only one thinking this way. I could go on forever about this book but I don't want to spoiler you if you haven't read it yet (which you should, in that case). I just need to say this: I feel like dear Mr. Green tried very hard to create the typical "On-tumblr-all-day-introvert" character (Hazel), so he stuffed all these character traits into it, which in the end made the character a bit unrealistic and less relatable. ;__; However, I love Augustus' views on "things" and his hero syndrome (which I could strangely well relate to).
This book is about: A young girl called Hazel - someone who likes to be alone at home rather than out with friends and who calls her lungs "crap lungs"; for a good reason, that is: Hazel was diagnosed with Stage 4 Thyroid cancer at the age of 13. This book is about her story, and how a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters helps rewrite it completely.
You will like this book if: You find yourself thinking about life and death a lot, you don't mind a little romance, you're a teenage girl (I think it's as simple as that)
Little Bee - Chris Cleave
This book is about: (It may not sound too exciting) it is about a young Nigerian refugee called Little Bee, and about an English woman, Sarah. I know, I know but let me tell you: Do not judge the book by its cover - and I don't mean the literal cover. I know it sounds like that other novel telling the tragic story of a young African girl, but this book is different! The story and story-telling of this book is bittersweet - give it a try! :)
You will like this book if: You think Queen-of-England-jokes are funny, you don't mind some good ol' social criticism, you like analyzing characters (so much fun with this book! :D)
Thinking, Fast and Slow - Daniel Kahneman
This book is about: Ahh, how to even start... This is not a novel, and doesn't exactly tell a story. It's about how we judge people, rational and intuitive decision-making, and no - I cannot summarize this. The back of the book says "Buy it fast. Read it slowly. It will change the way you think!". Very true.
You will like this book if: You're interested in psychology, you'd like to learn about "systems" that drive the way we think, you dislike cheesy love stories and rather read something that helps you understand the human mind a little bit better ;D
The Perks of Being a Wallflower - Stephen Chbosky
One of my favorite books ever... Why? Mainly because of Charlie who is a character I can actually relate to. Even though Charlie is a 15-year-old boy (and I'm clearly not) I can really identify with him. The way he over-analyzes things, the way he sees things, and which conclusions he draws from others' behaviors - so much like me. This book is an easy read, nothing complicated like Thinking Fast and Slow, and extremely funny and touching! I laughed and cried so much reading this masterpiece.
This book is about: The life of Charlie, high school, the world of making new friends, first dates, sex, drugs and the Rocky Horror Picture Show! (No more, I don't want to spoiler you. Just go buy this right now!)
You'll like this book if: You'll definitely like this book. Cancel the "if".
Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell
Can I just say that the design of the cover is awesome? (That's actually why I purchased it in the first place lol)
Cloud Atlas is amazing. Some chapters weren't very easy for me to understand because I'm not a native English speaker, so I took a little longer on this bad boy :P However, it was worth every minute of reading!
This book is about: There are six interlacing stories; the stories are separate but also connected. For instance, the first story (which is a book) is read by a character in the second story. It sounds really cool already right? David Mitchell is so talented with words, if I may put it like that, which I thought was fascinating. (I am definitely going to reread this book)
You'll like this book if: You get bored easily with certain characters (that's not going to happen to you when reading Cloud Atlas), you like rhetorical devices and interpreting texts ^^, you like fantasy
The Importance of Being Earnest - Oscar Wilde
This book is about: Jack Worthing and his best friend Algernon Moncrieff. It plays in 1890's England, the Victorian Era. The story is quite entertaining (it involves invented friends, love and cucumber sandwiches)!
You'll like this book if: You're into sarcasm, you like satires, you feel like reading something light, easy and funny
Ashes - Ilsa J. Bick
To be honest, I haven't finished this book yet. I'm currently reading it but I wanted to include it here! So far, the book is very vivid and pictorial.
This book is about: A girl named Alex, "an electromagnetic pulse flashing across the sky, destroying every electronic device, wiping out every computerized system, and killing billions." - A little terrifying but very thrilling
You'll like this book if: You're in for some zombie fiction, you like fantasy, you'd like to read something thrilling and suspenseful
